DESCRIPTION:The Annual Peninsula Point Birding Picnic is SUNDAY May 17\nNO REGISTRATION REQUIRED, but PLEASE SIGN IN WHEN YOU ARRIVE\nPeninsula Point Lighthouse at the tip of the Stonington Peninsula is one of the best locations in the UP to witness spring migration.\nSPECIAL NOTE – we have moved this event to SUNDAY because of the WARBLER WONDERLAND Festival in Manistique. Visit www.schoolcraftcd.org to learn more. \nTime: All morning (arriving around dawn will give you the best views). Some people spend the night nearby, making it easy to get started early. When you arrive, be considerate of others when you park. It might be crowded. \nConditions – most of the walking is easy and dry. Parking might get a little tight, so please be gracious.  IT WILL BE GNATTY. They do not bite but can be pretty distracting, especially in the open grassy areas; hope for a slight breeze.  BATHROOMS are PIT TOILETS, so bring sanitizer.\nCarpooling: Please make your ride arrangements.\nPicnic: THIS YEAR, an information table will be set up for sign-in and recording bird sightings. Bring food and drinks, and we will gather at 12:oo noon for a meal break and bird report. Maybe bring a pop-up table, as picnic tables are very limited. There are NO grills. \nDriving Instructions: From US Highway 2 proceed 2.8 miles east from Rapid River; take the exit towards Stonington and travel south on County Road 513. Follow CR 513 for 17.7 miles to the peninsula’s tip, where you will find the Peninsula Point Lighthouse.\nInformation: Contact Beth Olson (phone: 906-360-4366)\nBIRDING : Hundreds of neo-tropical songbirds like warblers, tanagers, orioles, grosbeaks, vireos, buntings, and thrushes are readily found each year, along with shorter-distance migrants like sparrows, jays, woodpeckers, chickadees, and finches. On a good day, a birder can easily tally over 100 species, including over 20 species of warblers. Some highlights from past field trips include both Summer and Western Tanagers, Hooded Warblers, Connecticut Warblers, Rose Breasted Grosbeaks, Indigo Buntings, egrets, swans, terns, yellowlegs, and hundreds of Whimbrels.\nNEW for 2026 – Birding Guides – Report to the LWBA table to meet with one of our members who will help you identify the sights and sounds of spring migration. \nJoin us for some of spring’s best birding. A bonus of this gathering is that plenty of expert birders will be available to help with spotting and bird identification. Just raise your hand.\nNO REGISTRATION REQUIRED\n
