This year, LWBA invites you to participate in Global Big Day. Here is a general description.
Global Big Day 2026 is on Saturday, 9 May 2026, a 24-hour worldwide event inviting birders to document as many bird species as possible to support conservation. Organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, participants can bird from anywhere—even their own backyards—and submit checklists via the eBird mobile app or website. eBird +2
Key Details for Global Big Day 2026
- When: Saturday, 9 May 2026, from midnight to midnight.
- Participation: Free and open to all skill levels, from 10 minutes to a full day of birding.
- Goal: To count species and raise awareness for bird conservation, with a focus on migration periods.
- Tools: Use the free eBird app for reporting and Merlin Bird ID for identification.
LWBA Big Day Instructions
This will be an independent activity. All birders welcome from Marquette, Alger, Delta, Dickinson, Schoolcraft, and Menominee Counties.
Requires basic knowledge of eBird (we will not be able to help you with eBird for this activity. We hope to have an eBird learning activity later this year)
Form a TEAM(1 or more), create a fun TEAM NAME ( the Kestrels or …) – Bird your favorite eBird hotspots in your area. You may also bird your yard, or anywhere else where birding is good. No limit to how many spots you bird. Create a unique eBird report for each location.
Use the TRIP REPORT feature to summarize your day. Use your TEAM NAME as part of the Trip Report title. (see instructions below)
If you like, add a narrative to your trip report.
