Peshekee Grade Field Trip, November 9, 2024
DATE: November 9, 2024
TIME: 8:30 am(at Peshekee Grade parking lot) – 2:00 PM
ATTENDEES – Members and non-members are welcome
MEET LOCATION: From Marquette driving west on 41/28, pass VanRiper State Park, over the Peshekee River, TURN RIGHT onto Peshekee Grade, also labeled as Huron Bay Grade on Google Maps, Road 607. Look for the McCormick Wilderness sign. Past the church a ways, we will gather at the large parking area on the left. From there we can carpool north.
LEADER(s): Brian Murphy and
PLAN: from the parking area we will make our way up the Peshekee Grade stopping at numerous locations that provide good habitats for boreal species. We will hike into the McCormick Wilderness for about 1 mile, then continue driving north for a few more miles.
CONDITIONS: It’s November, (almost)NO BUGS! And not much sun. So dress warm and always be prepared for rain and mud. We will be doing a lot of stop-and-go driving and some hiking. Pack water, snacks, and lunch. There is an outhouse at the McCormick Wilderness parking lot, but there will be no other bathroom facilities. How long this outing lasts depends on many factors. If you need to get back to town at a set time, consider driving yourself or there may be others that want to get back earlier that you can carpool with. THE ROAD IS VERY BUMPY IN SPOTS, both paved and dirt. Please do not plan to drive in a low-clearance vehicle.
BIRDING – Our main targets are boreal species, Boreal Chickadee, Canada Jay, and Black-backed Woodpecker, but no guarantees. Please review our birding guidelines.
CANCELATION: if conditions prevent a safe and enjoyable outing, the event will be canceled within ONE HOUR of the starting time via text messages and Facebook announcement.
RAIN DATE -TBD
